What if you forget your food rules?
Life is already full of rules. That’s why we try to avoid them as much as possible with Never Binge Again. Some rules are unavoidable though as they are an effective way of changing behavior. Food rules are that kind of rule. But what happens if you ‘forget’ your food rules or you lose concentration for a minute?
The important thing to do is not be too hard on yourself. We are all human and we all make mistakes. There’s an important saying I want you to remember, ‘The fool isn’t the one that makes a mistake. It’s the one that repeats it.’ Nobody wants to be a fool.
That said, the food rules we establish in this course are important. So try to remember these points if you do forget:
Treat the food rules as you would any other inviolable rule
You wouldn’t tell a cop you forgot the speed limit or forgot you couldn’t steal from a store. You wouldn’t tell the bank you forgot to pay your mortgage that month or tell the government you forgot to do your taxes. These rules are ingrained in our consciousness so much that we know we cannot forget.
We need our food rules to be the same.
Repeating ‘I will never eat “Pig Slop” Monday through Friday’ over and over to yourself will embed it in your mind. The more you say it and the more you repeat it, the less likely you are to forget. Thinking this every time you walk past the refrigerator or food cupboard or when you go to the store will reinforce this idea in your mind.
Over time, it will be triggered automatically every time you walk past the refrigerator or food cupboard or when you go to the store. Being conscious and in the moment will help you remain on plan.
Celebrate those times when you do remember the food rules
Finally, changing behaviors is about positive reinforcement. When we get a positive outcome out of making a decision, it creates a link in our brain between that decision and the pleasure we received from it. Keep making the same decisions and the feedback loop strengthens. The stronger it is, the more powerful it is!
We don’t want you to forget the food rules but everyone makes mistakes. Always strive to be better and you will become better. That’s all we want!
