Why every craving can be a force for good!
We spend a lot of time trying to deny or ignore our cravings. While that can be effective when we are busy doing other things, when we have the luxury of time we can use our cravings as a positive.
You know the saying ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger?’ This is like that.
Cravings are an opportunity for self-improvement. Every time you feel a craving and refuse to give in, you make yourself a little stronger. Every time you say ‘No!’ to your craving, you make it just a tiny bit easier to say no next time.
Ignoring cravings is fine when you don’t have the time or energy to do more. Suppressing those urges will maintain your place on your road to self-improvement but actively saying no pushes you forwards.
We learn the most from tougher decisions and actively saying no to cravings is definitely a tough decision. But it’s a decision that can genuinely change your life for the better.
Rinse and repeat
Repetition is the key to making or breaking any habit. The more you do something, the easier and more habitual it becomes. Every time you learn something new or run an extra mile, it becomes just a little bit easier to learn or run again. We use the same principles here.
Say No to a craving and it becomes easier next time.
Redirect a craving for junk to something healthy and that becomes easier next time too.
Train your brain
As amazing as the human brain is, it uses some very basic methods to work. Repetitive actions create links between neurons that carry the signal faster and stronger. The more we repeat, the stronger the link. Depending on what’s going on in your life, a further link is created, that of pleasure or pain.
A craving creates a pleasure link. Every time you give in, you feel pleasure. It may only last a minute, but it is there. The brain loves pleasure which is why it craves more and we all know where that path leads!
Break the link between cravings and pleasure and those cravings lessen. Reward yourself with healthy food instead of junk and your brain eventually rewires the pleasure link to that instead.
As you well know, it is much easier to read than to do but any endeavor worth your time is going to be tough. And you’re not alone. I am here with you every step of the way.
Ignoring cravings is a positive step to make. Actively say no to them and you begin rewiring your brain. Then the sky is the limit to what you can achieve!
