Striving for eating perfection
We all know there is no such thing as perfect yet we continue to look for it and strive to be it. Some psychologists say guidelines are better than rules and that if you tell yourself ‘I should aim for 90% success because that’s better than now’, you’re off to a good start.
There is a good reason why this isn’t good advice.
If you accept the possibility of failure, you are more likely to fail. Set yourself up to achieve perfection in your eating habits and you stand a much better chance of achieving that.
Excuse for failure
On the surface, aiming for 90% success seems fair. Fair on yourself allowing for human nature. Fair to our inner voice that tells us to eat and for the busy lives we all lead.
Flip that and you’re already setting yourself for failure at least 10% of the time. And we know it won’t end there.
Fail even once and it is easier to fail again. You’ll live through it. You may not see any negative effects. You may not gain weight or get ill. So your inner voice will say ‘See? It didn’t hurt last time so it won’t hurt this time’. That’s a hard argument to counter if you know you can fail occasionally and not feel guilty.
Until we get control of binge eating, we HAVE to strive for perfection. We may fail. We may stumble. But we have to do everything we possibly can to avoid it. Telling yourself anything less is doing yourself a disservice.
Striving for eating perfection does not mean you’ll achieve it.
It does mean you will do all you can to avoid giving in.
In a fight as difficult as this, that can mean the difference between success or failure. When failure could literally mean the difference between life and death, the stakes just don’t get higher!
